Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are emitted as gases from certain solids or liquids. VOC compounds include a variety of chemicals, some of which may have short and long term adverse health effects. Concentrations of many VOC gases are consistently higher indoors (up to ten times higher) than outdoors. Organic chemicals are widely used as ingredients in numerous products. Paints, varnishes and wax all contain organic solvents, as do many cleaning, disinfecting, degreasing and automotive products. Fuels are made up of organic chemicals. All of these products can release volatile organic compounds. Some common VOC vapors includes: Benzene, Xylene, Dimethylacetamide, Vinyl Chloride Monomoer and hundreds more. Characteristic organic functional groups include Alcohols, Aldehydes, Ketones, Esters, Aromatics and Acids.
